View From the Back Deck

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, but we’ve been really busy with the wedding, honeymoon and house purchase all in a row. Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time clearing away the “jungle” that was left to grow around and on the house. So far I’ve cleared 2 10-yard dumpsters worth of English ivy and although it looks like a huge improvement, there’s still a lot to go.

On Saturday, Bubby was nice enough to bring by his chainsaw to help with the removal of a few troublesome trees. There were 2 really long dead trees in the back that were at risk of sliding down into the back of the house. There was also a large tree that was growing out of a pillar in the retaining wall. As nice as it looked there, it was a terrible idea because eventually the wall would crack and smash our neighbor’s home.

In order to get to the 2 dead trees I had to clear a path up the old, rotten stairs that go up the hill behind the home to 2 decks that were once probably extremely nice to be in. I took a video of the view which took some climbing and careful stepping (the deck gave out in a few spots and several stairs were rotted away).

As you can see the view from up there is REALLY nice. It’s too bad that it was left to rot over the years. One day we’ll try and repair/replace it, but that’s way down the road.

Here’s a progression of the house so far: F & P’s Home Updates

House Cleanup Pictures

These were taken back in September of 2009. Unfortunately I don’t have pictures from the first dumpster, but below are the slideshows from Dumpster 2 and 3. In total I went through 4 10-yard dumpsters cleaning up the yard debris at the house.

A music video for the band Blitzen Trapper that my friend’s husband helped make. Music isn’t bad, but I thought the video was very well done.

Food, Inc.

Going to try and see this movie this weekend. Since becoming a vegetarian, for the past 14 years I’ve spent a lot of time researching what goes into the food that I used to eat and it’s disturbing. This movie isn’t about being a vegetarian, but being aware of what the food industry doesn’t want you to know. Here’s the Official Website.

Rogue Beer & Cheese Tasting

A little late in posting about the Rogue Beer & Cheese Tasting, but I’ve been busy with work, wedding and house paperwork fun.

We met up with our drinking buddies that P met at a MeetUp group; Heather and her husband Todd. They were kind enough to pre-purchase tickets for us at a discount since they’re part of Rogue’s membership club.

It looked like a full event and you could tell from amount of body heat in the room. After a few drinks though you start to not care about things like that.

Before getting into the tastings, Fred started us out with a shot of Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey which was pretty good.

Here’s the list of beer and cheese combos we tried in order:

1. Full Sail LTD 03 Lager paired with Ferns Edge Fresh Chevre

2. Eugene City Brewery Honey Orange Wheat paired with Willamette Valley Gouda

3. Rogue Hazelnut Brown paired with Alsea Feta

4. Rogue Dead Guy Ale paired with Monteillet Fromagerie Mejean

5. Rogue Mocha Porter paired with Rogue Creamery Stout Cheddar

6. Deschutes Twilight Ale paired with Bravo Cheddar Special Reserve

7. Terminal Gravity IPA paired with Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog

8. Issaquah Brewery Menage a Frog paired with Rogue Creamery Chipotle Cheddar

9. Hair of the Dog Fred paired with Rogue Creamery Oregonzola

10. Rogue Imperial Stout paired with Maytag Blue of Iowa

I’d have to say my favorite cheeses were the stout cheddar, chipotle cheddar and the Humboldt Fog just for its weirdness. The humboldt wasn’t the best tasting one at first, but it left a very nice honey after taste which I was surprised by.

Although the event was fun I’d have to say I had cheese overload by the end of it.

House Offer

P and I put down an offer on a home this morning after we were approved for the mortgage yesterday. I think the sellers have a couple days to accept it or not before we can move on with the home inspection. Below is a link to a virtual tour of the property. It’s actually almost right above the house we’re renting currently. We both really like the area and it’s an about the same 1 1/2 mile walk to work I have now. We’ll see how it goes…

Fred Eckhardt’s Beer & Cheese Tasting

The first (and last) beer and cheese tasting that P and I did was hosted at Fox & Obel which featured beer from Goose Island in Chicago. We’ll see how this one compares.

North American Organic Brewers Festival

Today P and I went to the North American Organic Brewers Festival at Overlook Park. I had previously gone to this festival last year with John and Melanie (old post for 2008 here).

For the most part the festival was the same with the exception of more double token tastings which was ok I suppose. Some of them deserved it after tasting them (Samuel Smith’s Cherry ale for example).

After a few hours of wandering around we bumped into a couple that P knows from a happy hour meet-up group she runs, so we hung out with them under a spot they claimed in the large tent. This was a new and welcomed addition from last year since there really isn’t shade from the sun. I did end up burning my face, neck and badly burning my right arm (since it was holding beer all day). That was my fault since I stupidly forgot to put any sun screen on.

Here’s a list of the beers we tried:

Bison: Chocolate Stout (a Dry Foreign Style Stout)
Captured By Porches: Invasive Species IPA
Crannog Ales: Backhand Of God Stout
Dupont: Foret Saison
Eel River Brewing: Acai Berry Wheat
Elliott Bay Brewing: Organic Coffee Stout & Coffee Oatmeal Stout
Fort George Brewery: Spruce Ale
Hopworks Beer: Hopworks Organic IPA & Cascadian Dark Ale
Lakefront Brewery: Organic Coffee Stout
MateVeza: Yerba Mate IPA (one of the more interesting beers)
Nelson: After Dark
New Old Lompoc: Bald Guy Brown Ale
Oakshire Brewing: Overcast Espresso Stout
Pike Brewing Company: Monk’s Uncle
Samuel Smith: Organic Strawberry Ale & Organic Cherry Ale (definitely our favorites of the day)
Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing: People’s Porter
Standing Stone Brewing: Oatmeal Stout (on nitro)
Wandering Aengus: Heirloom Blend Cider
Wolavers: Pat Leavy’s Ale (American Amber Ale)

I feel like I’m leaving a beer or three out of the list, but I can’t be held accountable for losing track after all of those.

Aside from the beer they had a few food tents set up. P didn’t want any of the food tey offered, but I did buy two different items from a veggie tent. I had the vegetarian Italian meatball sub and the vegetarian Philly cheese steak. The “meatball” sub was actually pretty good, but the Philly cheese steak wasn’t close to what I remember them tasting like. It wasn’t bad, but I’d probably not choose it again if there were other options.

Next up we’ll be at the Oregon Brewfest!

Oregon Zoo Photo Shoot

Today we had a photo class at the Oregon Zoo which was being hosted by Ritz Camera and Camera World. P had purchased a camera from Camera World and with each purchase you are given vouchers for free classes which are posted at Ritz Camera University. The zoo one was a paid class however for $25 a person which included a coupon for a free $25 photo book that you can design yourself, so really you paid for the book and got the lessons for free.

At first I was a little hesitant about staying for it since everyone in the group had nice SLR cameras and all I had was my Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5K 9MP Digital Camera with 10x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black) point and shoot camera. I also didn’t know most of the features of it, but hey that’s what this class was for right?

At first I was taking photos using the default settings that the camera came with until I finally asked one of the trainers, A.J. (I keep wanting to call him Robby for some reason) looked at it and walked me through some changes which I think made a huge difference in the picture quality.

In the below pictures you will probably be able to tell when I made the changes as the quality increased some:I also took a few videos with the camera which I’ll just post a couple. The first one is of a lorikeet feeding on some nectar while on my arm here:

And this is one of a giraffe that had a very itchy ear and was using his feeder to scratch it:

One thing I also tried fooling around with was the burst shot mode on the camera. These are all photos of some bats that I took using the burst shot mode and then spliced them all together using Microsoft Movie Maker. It turned into an odd, hypnotic film…the chewing is so weird looking:
