House Hunting – Woodstock Area

On Saturday we took a trip to the Woodstock area of SE Portland to look at a home right by Reed College. I received an email (as I usually do on a daily basis) and had this home listed at approximately $103 per square foot which is a bargain for the area. After we arrived there and took a walk through we could see why.

The outside of the home looked to be in good condition, but the inside definitely needs work. I think a good portion of the windows would need to be replaced since they appear to be the original ones (the home was build in 1925) and a few of them had the counter weights missing. There were also random sinks in some of the rooms that you can see from the slide show that didn’t really make a lot of sense. We were thinking we could either turn them into 1/2 baths, or just rip the sinks out. In the kitchen we would also need to rip out those white cabinets which would turn that area into a nice little dining nook.

For the amount they’re asking for the home it was definitely not worth it. Since the home was just listed a few days ago I’m sure this will drop several thousands of dollars over time. I think we’re looking at about $50k – $75k to get the home to the shape we’d want. I’d also want to do some work on the small “mother-in-law” apartment which is part of the house, but has its own entrance way, bathroom and kitchen. We could probably rent that out as a 1 bedroom and get about $700 a month for it which would help pay for the home and repairs. Maybe if it dropped down to $350,000ish it might be worth it.

More House Hunting

Today Pech and I did our first physical house browsing. Previously we had just looked at listings online, but with everything else going on we didn’t have much time to actually go to an open house.

We originally wanted to view a listing on NE Going St. that we both really liked. That all changed after we saw it in person. Aside from the great kitchen which was recently remodeled, it needed a lot of work. It definitely has potential, but for our first home I don’t think either of us wanted to start with a fixer upper.

Since we had time we decided to drive around the area and found two other houses that had open houses going on. The first was a really cute (but small) bungalow right by Wilshire Park. The total SQ FT is around 900 (very small), but the great use of the space made it seem much larger. Also, there is a detached garage which has a full bathroom installed along with a kitchen sink, small furnace and wood burning stove. If we wanted to we could turn it into either a studio to rent out, a guest home, or a nice entertainment room with a bar. It also has a really nice yard and was well kept.

The third home was right on NE 33rd Ave. This home was around 2,894 SQ FT and in very nice condition. The only down side to this place aside from the cost ($449,000 as opposed to $299,000 for the smaller home) is that it only has one bathroom. There is enough space in here though that we could add another full bath if we wanted to spend the money.

Below are the pictures we took of the last two homes. I’ll edit them later with a description, but you should be able to tell when the one home ends and the new one starts.

Deloitte Portland Office Skamania, WA Outing

Deloitte Portland Office Skamania, WA Outing

On August 1, 2008 we had our office “Field Day” at the Skamania Lodge, which is also one of the places that Pech and I spent the night for our 7 year anniversary.

During the outing you had a choice of either golfing, hiking or taking pictures of the golfing teams. Because of my back I knew I wouldn’t be able to golf and the hike was one we did when were there for our anniversary, so I chose to take photos. Unfortunately it rained for the majority of the day, but for the most part I had fun taking pictures with my photo group.

Below are the team pictures along with a few gray, rainy nature shots.

Nizamuddin Syed’s Wedding Reception

Nizamuddin Syed’s Wedding Reception

On Friday July 25th 2008, my good friend Nizam (sorry, but you’ll always be Syed to me) was married. I flew in on the 24th, but wasn’t able to attend the wedding due to transportation issues. I was able to go to the reception on the 27th though and have attached a few pictures below…

Unfortunately none of them are of Nizam, his bride, or their family. I sort of spaced it because of all the other people taking pictures and didn’t want to be in the way. Instead I took pictures of Mazhar, his wife Freeda and their son and their family. There are a few of Pech as well.

Pech and I wish Nizam and his wife Syeda a long and happy marriage!

Portland International Beer festival 2008

Portland International Beer festival 2008

Oh, look…another beer festival in Portland. This weekend was the Portland International Beer festival (even though it goes to a Seattle site for some reason). This was hosted in the Pearl District – North Park Blocks which is only a few blocks from my work. Here they had a great selection of 130 beers from 15 different countries which also included several from local Oregon breweries.

I decided to go here after a morning viewing (9:30 AM to be precise) of Batman: The Dark Knight which I have to say was the BEST movie of the year in my opinion. The acting, story and action scenes were amazing.

While at the festival I decided to partake in the following beers:

Dogfish Head Brewery
Burton Baton – Double IPA (Delaware) 10% ABV
United International Distributor
Ola Dubh 30 Year Highland Park – Single Malt Barrel-aged Scottish Old Ale (Scotland) 8% ABV
Full Sail Brewery
Top Sail Bourbon-Aged Imperial Porter – Barrel-Aged Imperial Porter (Oregon) 9.9% ABV
D & V International
Belzebuth – Malt Liquor of Certain Death (France) 13% ABV
Mountain Meadows Meadery
Cranberry Mead – Mead (California) 14% ABV
B. United International
Almond’22 Torbata – Peat Smoked Italian Barleywine (Italy) 8.7% ABV

Overall I enjoyed each one, but I’d have to say my favorite was the Almond’22 Torbata for its unique flavor. A great movie and good beer…all in all a good day.

Seattle Office Visit

So on Sunday and Monday I was up in Seattle to visit the Deloitte Seattle office and my fellow co-workers in the IT department. Unfortunately by the time arrived and checked into my hotel, most everything was closed. I ended up taking all of my photos from either the hotel, or office window. 🙁

The nicer pictures with the water and stadium were taken from the IT department (great view!).

My 4th of July was spent over at Melanie & John’s house and their friend Jon came as well. After eating Melanie set off a bunch of fireworks and then we headed into the house for a few games of pool.

North American Organic Brewers Festival 2009

This past weekend was the North American Organic Brewers Festival
NAOBF
in Overlook Park right off the MAX Yellow Line in Portland, OR.

The North American Organic Brewers Festival (NAOBF) returns the last weekend in June, 2009. The event is Free and open to the public. Participation in beer tasting is $5 for a reusable, yet compostable, cornstarch tasting glass and samples are $1 a ticket. A full glass is 4 tickets. Strong beers (over 8% alcohol by volume) and certain imported beers will cost more. Children are welcome with guardians. Sorry, no pets allowed. Beer sales are restricted to people 21 years and older with valid ID. Discount of $1 off of tasting glass with validated MAX ticket or three cans of food (preferably organic) for the Oregon Food Bank. No Parking is provided for this event, making Tri-Met’s MAX Yellow line the easiest way to attend.

I attended the festival on Sunday with my friend Melanie from work and her husband John. The festival had approximately 40 different micro-brews from several different breweries. If only I had the fortitude and liver to sample them all.

The event was free to get in and you could either pay $1 per ticket and $5 for the tasting glass (which, as stated above, was made out of corn to fit with the green theme), or pay $20 for the glass and 15 drink tickets which is the option I chose.

Even with the 95 degree heat (and some sunburn) the event was fun and a great opportunity to sample a variety of new beers. Thanks to Melanie for picking me up and taking me over and back!

Belated Happy Birthday to Melanie

Belated Happy Birthday to Melanie.

I’m a little late in posting this image and message, but well that’s me. On 6/21/08 I was invited to Melanie’s 33rd birthday party which had the theme of “33 in 33”. As you can see in the image she was dressed for the year. There was a BBQ and much mocking of my vegetarian sausages, but it was to be expected. Great weather and a nice get together.

Happy B-day!

Where The Hell Is Matt

This is Matt Harding’s newest “Dance” video. Although this was more a test to see how video linking looks in Blogger, I also really liked the video. I remember watching his first one two years ago and thought it was a great idea Where The Hell Is Matt. He just released his newest one today which I’ve linked below and also embedded.

Now if only I could get Stride Gum, or another company to sponsor my travels!
